Most people can
only afford motor bikes to transport a multitude of products with never
ending ingenuity. Entire families are carried in the arms of the parents,
sometimes 4 people on one bike, rain or shine. |
|
Gecko's are a common sight, harmlessly darting on walls catching flies. Artisans are numerous throughout the island and creativity flows into everything. Wood carving, stone sculptures, architectural ornaments, it's endless... |
|
|
Ubud is the mecca
for shopping all of Indonesia's crafts and wares. Furniture, textiles,
mosaics, lamps, fashion, jewelry, toys, home decor, shoes, beaded accessories,
paintings, batik...it's a shoppers dream town. |
|
The market is open
every day with hundreds of stalls, all ready to bargain for a good morning
price. If you are the first sale of the day your money will be tapped
around the store on other items to bring good luck. |

LEFT: Wayan the
healer from Elizabeth Gilbert's book Eat Pray Love. Her library, herbal
supplements complement her treatments, RIGHT: the meal to end it all
including tofu satay, sea weed, and other nutritious foods. |

People will crowd
into any vehicle to get around. Often workers will be transported this
way. Rice paddies can be seen in various stages of growth around Ubud
and the island. |

Mud sheds

seen from a restaurant terrace. RIGHT- many offerings are set at the
cracks of this sidewalk to appease the spirits that might live there. |

Hundreds of shops
adorn the streets of Ubud, punctuated by an assortment of open air restaurants
attracting international visitors; Locals buzz around on motorbikes. |
|
Modernity shows
a surprising face with motorized weed trimmers; Delectable guava frosty;
the full moon over Ubud. |

|
Denpasar is Bali's
capital city and houses the largest outdoor market, where throngs of
Balinese shop for their needs. Hundreds of motorbikes are crammed into
the parking lot. |
| |
|
Before a big festive
day flowers are available for those who make their own offerings, and
ready made offerings are available for those who don't. Some people
have them in their cars; Poultry and fruit sit side by side. |

Kecak Fire
Trance Dance is one of many professional performances offered each night
in Ubud. Close to 100 men sing, chant and dance as the story is illustrated
by characters out of an ancient Hindu myth about Rama and Sita. |
|
At the end of the
performance coconut husks are lit and a dancer on a horse costume kicks
it around time after time. He receives a blessing from a priest, then
sits ready to receive curious spectators checking out his blackened
feet. |
